It is now possible for iOS users to upgrade their iDevices. The new version of the iOS comes with a load of features that is tempting even to users with jailbroken devices, the long restoration process notwithstanding. However, it is important to note that the process of upgrading will require users with jailbroken devices to drop all the applications that were acquired outside of the App Store. This is because the device will be completely cleaned up after the upgrade and you will need to reinstall the applications. You can still jailbreak your device after the upgrade so this should not be that much of a problem. The following five easy steps can help you upgrade your jailbroken iOS device without problems.
Step 1: First, you need to do a full sync and back up of your iDevice.
This can easily be done with the help of iTunes. Ensure that iTunes is not in sync mode when you are performing the back up. Also, make sure you save all your important information including photos, contacts, etc. By default, iTunes is mostly set to sync and backup mode but you do not want to second-guess. Just to be sure, you can right-click your device once you have plugged it in your computer and the select back-up.
Step 2 You need to make a full list of all the Cydia packages and applications.
You can either do this by hand or you can email yourself the list with the help of apps such as the AppInfo. This will come in handy when you need to reinstall the packages as you will be able to remember all the cleaned apps after restoration. Tools such as the PkgBackup and AptBackup may be handy but may create incompatibilities when you are doing a full system upgrade, say from iOS 6 to iOS 7.
Step 3 Restoration of your iDevice will be done with the help of iTunes.
iTunes will upgrade your device to the latest available version of the iOS. However, if your mission is to upgrade your device to an iOS version that is not necessarily the latest, you can make use of SHSH blobs. Click on Restore to update to the latest iOS version and not Update in order to preserve maximum disk space.
Step 4 Back-up to your device or whether you want to set up your device as new.
Choose to load your back-up as this will significantly reduce the time needed to reconfigure the jailbroken apps after you have reinstalled them. However, it is not always a guarantee that this is the best option since bad settings from the old tweaks may sometimes result in problems. In case you experience any such problems, just back up and restore again and this time select to set up as new.
Step 5 Finally, you need to jailbreak and reinstall your Cydia packages.
This will depend on the method you employed in step 2 above. Select Manage Account to go to the Cydia store packages. You can sign in using the same account you used when you initially purchased the packages even though some of those packages may have independent purchase systems.
